Review

In 1990, Jeffrey Mellman, a TV director who has previously helmed episodes of Malcolm in the Middle, Scrubs, Becker, Just Shoot Me, Everybody Loves Raymond, the King of Queens, Night Court, A.L.F. and Victoria’s Closet (busy boy!), made a TV movie called A Family For Joe. It centered on a family of four orphaned children who, in a bid not to be separated by social services, found an old homeless man (Robert Mitchum) to pretend to be their grandpa. The TV movie was a success, or at least enough of a success for someone in a high place to get the idea of turning the premise into a series. The series was duly retooled by the suits, who kicked out all but one of the original teenage cast members (Jessica Player), replacing Chris Furrh, Maia Brewton, and Jarrad Paul with David Lascher, Ben Savage, and Juliette Lewis. The series duly sank like a stone. No nudity was involved, but Juliette Lewis certainly showed her best side in Strange Days a few years later. And we’ve got the pictures, baby.
