Review

Although it sounds like a documentary on George Foreman’s family, 10,000 Black Men Named George (2002) is actually a socially and politically astute historical drama, featuring a bevy of top-tier actors. The film recounts the true story of the railway-car porter who started the first African American labor union in the 1920s. Weary of low wages, demanding hours, and unfair treatment, Ashley Totten (Mario Van Peebles) courageously risked life and limb to change American race and labor relations for the better. Robert Townsend’s made-for-cable film isn’t dry, library-ready fare, however--co-star Karen Eyo livens it up during a brief scene in which she uses her bewitching curves to seduce a wary porter.
