The director of countless true-crime thrillers, Ulli Lommel turns his attention to more imaginary horrors in the low-budget splatter fest Zombie Nation (2004). Crammed full of squeam-inducing torture sequences, Lommel’s fright film follows the travails of a rogue police officer whose personal history of sexual abuse has turned him into a renegade monster. When Officer Singer (Gunther Ziegler) murders a scantily clad streetwalker (Martina Bottesch) who just happens to be protected by a voodoo curse, however, he unleashes a Pandora’s Box of horrors. The majority of Lommel’s film is given over to hellishly realistic scenes of bodily harm, but Bottesch does lighten the mood somewhat with her candid reveals.
