Acclaimed director Robert Towne relates the amazing true story of long-distance runner Steve Prefontaine in the star-studded biopic Without Limits (1998). Billy Crudup plays the handsome and talented Oregon-born runner whose cocky attitude and near-inhuman abilities made him the top dog of the 1970s running world. As Towne’s film demonstrates, the runner’s potential was squandered by a series of calamitous events, beginning with the violent interruption of the 1972 Munich Olympics and concluding with Prefontaine’s tragic, early death. Nevertheless the athlete managed to attract his fair share of fans, including fawning females like the one played by former Mighty Morphin Power Ranger Amy Jo Johnson. The only downer is Johnson’s decision to go with a body double during her post-coital cuddle with Pre.
