Review

Set in post-WWII Bavaria, the German television movie Verlorenes Land (2002) chronicles the fallout from a forbidden relationship between a young countrywoman and a French POW. Martina Gedeck stars as Maria, a young woman whose intense devotion to the wounded Jean-Pierre (Merab Ninidze) upsets her parents, who falsely believe that Maria’s husband has somehow managed to survive the war. In their efforts to keep Maria chaste, the parents hypocritically ignore the rest of their kin, including Fanni (Nina Kunzendorf), who happily goes about her business stark naked.
