Review

Varietease (1954) is a documentary on the saucier side of life. It was directed by Irving Klaw, legendary skin photographer of Betty Page, so you’d be right in expecting the dark-page-cut hairdo of the iconic pinup bumping and grinding her stuff here. She does. But it’s not only her burlesque show. No there’s a large tent that is filled with such buxom 1950s sex goddesses as Lili St. Cryr, Bobby Shields, Chris Le Chris Lynn and many, many others. This is one of three films that Betty appeared in, so you know it’s a must-see. Sure, there’s comedians and other distractions between acts, but Betty’s short scene at the beginning is worth the price of admission, even if Lili is the headliner.
