Review

Traffic laws were made to be broken, especially if you are an ex Army Ranger and a semi-retired racecar driver who has just learned that your wife has gone unexpectedly into labor 1,200 miles away. Understandably, such a man’s tolerance for pesky speed limits might soon reach the Vanishing Point (1997). An updated remake of a car-chase epic of the same name from 1971, this high-speed, atmospheric drama points out that government authorities do not necessarily share the higher consciousness of the film’s hero and much of its audience. To wit, the highway-patrolling hard-ons just cannot wrap their minds around the concepts that velocity is relative and exceptions should be made to every rule. Law enforcement’s lack of enlightenment is so severe that the FBI is called in to erect an impassable barrier.
