Review

The American male has long suspected that the typical female from the states behaves very differently when she is on vacation alone in a romantic foreign land. And to state the obvious: make it France and it's au revoir underpants! Until September (1984) adds fuel to these fiery suppositions via a love story about a gorgeous Yank boning a Parisian banker, marital status be damned. Tidy, dark-haired sylph Mo Alexander (Karen Allen) may seem sensible and composed while on her home front, but let the prim and proper lady set down upon the boulevards of Paris, and she turns into a rutting minx for the first successful French banker who pays her the time of day. In this case, the lucky French fella is the wealthy businessman Xavier de la Perouse (Thierry Lhermitte). Those eyes, that accent, that uncircumcised baguette, he's truly irresistible. The coupling of these international lovers is played for equal measures of lust and laughs and may provide that rarest of erotic film dynamics--empowering the female viewer while infusing her boyfriend with a subtle doubt. Some critics loved it, but many hated it in large part because it's hard to root for Mo and Xavier to get together when that means Xavier would have to leave his family to do so. But after seeing the two screw, it's hard not to understand why they need to be together. Indy's girl Karen Allen shows all three B's while having all sorts of sex with her Parisian pal including riding him in a subtle but sexy way, and while spending some topless time in the bathtub. Ooh la la she should never put back on her bra! Why don't the foreign foxes throw themselves at us Americans the same way? We should just move to Europe, fake the accent, throw on a beret and get all sorts of play! Until then, we'll have to settle for fantasizing about women like Karen Allen in Until September
