Cynics might dismiss the 1970s as a decade of disco balls, leisure suits, and platform wingtips, but this denigrated era was also a time when three of the world’s most highly marketable movie stars, Richard Burton, Peter O’Toole, and Elizabeth Taylor, combined their talents in the effort to bring alive a radio play written by genius and wholly uncommercial Welsh wordsmith Dylan Thomas. The resultant Under Milk Wood (1972) relates one day’s events in an isolated fishing village as seen in the imagination and memory of a blind sea captain. Under Milk Wood is a rich and playful celebration of language and visual imagery, a masterful rendition of mood and place that could have been produced at no other point in film history than 1972.
