Biography

A true icon of the silver screen, Vivien Leigh was born under the name "Vivian Mary Hartley" in British-controlled India and went on to achieve her greatest fame as the prototypical southern belle "Scarlett O’Hara" in Gone with the Wind (1939). Before she played femme fatales, Vivien got her start playing a schoolgirl in the film Things Are Looking Up (1935). Sure, she was an uncredited extra, but even gorgeous gals need to start at the bottom sometimes. She was engaged to a man named John Gliddon, who just happened to be an agent. He didn't think she had a suitable name for an actress; hence, her professional name, "Vivian Leigh." Her fiancé recommended Vivien to Alexander Korda for more film roles, but at the time, Korda couldn't see Vivien's potential. She certainly proved him wrong! Vivien got so famous that she earned a reputation for being difficult to work with, but still, the opportunities kept rolling in. Although she made her living portraying legendary and literary beauties like "Cleopatra" in Caesar and Cleopatra (1945), "Blanche DuBois" in A Streetcar Named Desire (1951), and the titular Russian babe in Anna Karenina (1948), Vivien kept her 34A-23-34 body under wraps. Still, she gives us a bone with the wind, and frankly my dear, we don’t give a damn. Although her career wasn't consistent, the American Film Institute still ranked Vivien as 16th greatest female movie star of classic Hollywood cinema. She passed away in 1967. Vivien and her gorgeous figure will be missed.
