VH1 unearths a long-lost 1980s teen movie and decides to unleash it on the world in the spoofy send-up Totally Awesome (2006). Harkening back to the all-too-forgettable days of Corey and Corey, this would-be antique tells of a sweet-natured Midwestern-bred teen who must battle the jocks at his sunny new California campus. Naturally the plot’s just a convenient excuse for a series of winking references to florescent ’80s style. From Soul Man parodies to Tone Loc cameos, Chappelle’s Show director Neal Brennan gets plenty of comic mileage out of lambasting the era. Of course, there are a few key things that never go out of style, and actress Zara Taylor is kind enough to flash two of them in one of the film’s most appealing moments.
