Review

The Who may sound like the punch line from an old Abbott & Costello routine, but in fact the band is the originator of heavy--not as in heavy metal, but in “Whoa, that’s some heavy shit, man”--music. And the shit never got any heavier than when Ken Russell brought their rock opera to the big screen with Tommy (1975). Roger Daltry does his best to look like the deaf, dumb, and blind boy who sure plays a mean pinball. Elton John, in skyscraper platforms, shows up among other oddball celebrities, such as Tina Turner as the gyrating Acid Queen. But it’s Ann-Margret who will resonate with viewers as she struts her hourglass figure in all manner of mod outfits, including a mesh pantsuit that exposes her tighty-whiteys. She was actually nominated for an Academy Award for her perv-formance. She got Mr. Skin’s Oscar erect.
