Porn Stars Go From the Main Vein to Mainstream

Citing examples like Sasha Grey, Jenna Jameson, Traci Lords, Katie Morgan, and the upcoming stage musical based on the life of Linda Lovelace, yesterday’s LA Times declared that “porn stars are the new crossover artists.”

This does not include porn stars Mila, who is an ass artist, or Charlie, who appears in The Pickup Artist.

The widely reported recent death of Deep Throat director Gerard Damiano reminded the world of the time in the early 1970s, when porn chic brought hardcore to millions of viewers who would have never braved a porno theater before.

A few years later, home video would do a much better job of it.

Now that adult actresses like Sasha Grey and Katie Morgan are appearing in the new Steven Soderbergh film The Girlfriend Experience and Zack and Miri Make a Porno, respectively, the topic of porn in the mainstream is hot again.

Mr Skin Remembers Director of Deep Throat

Gerard Damiano, the man behind Golden Age classics Deep Throat and The Devil in Miss Jones and the mainstreaming of hardcore in the early 1970s dubbed “porn chic,” passed away this past Saturday from complications caused by a stroke.

Over his time in the industry, Damiano worked with stars like Linda Lovelace, Gloria Leonard, Harry Reems, Jamie Gillis, Peter North, George Payne, Sharon Mitchell, Annie Sprinkle, and Sharon Kane.

The director had retired in 1994 after making a total of 47 movies, including the BDSM-themed The Story of Joanna, Let My Puppets Come, and Splendor in the Ass with early anal queen Rachel Ryan.

Many people are familiar with the story of Bob Chinn without being aware of the fact due to Burt Reynolds’s Oscar-nominated performance as Jack Horner in Boogie Nights, as the character was loosely based on Chinn. Chinn began making adult movies in the early 1970s and retired in the late 1980s, only to return for a brief period in the late 1990s and early 2000s. He is best known for the Johnny Wadd films he made with the legendary performer John Holmes. In the enormously popular series, Holmes portrays a private detective who solves crimes in between servicing women with his mighty meat sword. On September 23, 2008, VCX released the original Johnny Wadd, taken from a pristine print, for the first time on DVD. Recently Mr. Chinn took some time out to discuss his movies and life with Mr Skin’s C.G. Hilliard.

Throughout the late 1980s, beloved Chicago film critics Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert campaigned for a rating to replace the MPAA’s dreaded X which, at first, had been used to designate all manner of films containing patently adult content (such as the 1968 Best Picture Academy Award winner Midnight Cowboy).

In the wake of Deep Throat, however, the X-rating became synonymous with hardcore pornography. Siskel and Ebert led the charge for a new rating – they suggested “A” (for adult) – that could be applied to non-sexploitation films that were intended for audiences over the age of 17.

The MPAA ultimately concocted the NC-17 rating, which stands for No Children Under 17, and the first film to reach the public bearing its imprimatur was flesh-friendly director Philip Kaufman’s Henry & June, which opened in theaters on this date in 1990.

Henry & June stars Fred Ward and young Uma Thurman in the titular roles, as libertine author Henry Miller and his omnisexual gamine wife June. The story focuses specifically on their mutual sexual entanglements with erotic writer Anaïs Nin -- scorchingly embodied by Maria de Madeiros -- in 1920s Paris.

Uma and Maria explode in a lust-tastic lesbian scene, and the rest of the movie is chock full of naked nubiles (including Brigitte Lahaie) celebrating sexual freedom as they truly did – and as the NC-17 rating, finally, made possible. more…

MTV recently reported that Anna Faris, who is presently hopping high atop box office charts in her tail-baring comedy hit The House Bunny, is preparing to portray larger-than-lust vintage porno pole-smoker Linda Lovelace in a biopic of the Deep Throat star tentatively titled Inferno.

Few figures from the Golden Age of Porn are more central and more controversial than Chuck Traynor. The cousin of the original Jay from the group Jay and the Americans, Traynor began acted in sexploitation movies like Joe Sarno’s Odd Triangle and Karla in the late 1960s.

From 1971 to 1974, Traynor was married to the original porn star and epitome of porn chic Linda Lovelace, whom he allegedly talked into entering the world of porn, first doing loops like the infamous Dog-Fucker and ultimately starring in the hardcore classic Deep Throat in 1972.

Although much continues to be (rightly) made of Deep Throat and the 1970s hardcore era of “Porn Chic,” one can not overstate the simultaneous cultural impact made by the softer side of the X-rating.

With that in mind, Mr. Skin wishes the happiest of birthdays (and birthday suits) to French filmmaker Just Jaeckin, who revolutionized erotic cinema with the worldwide phenomenon Emmanuelle, and who went on to helm other steamy classics on the order of The Story of O, Lady Chatterley’s Lover, and Gwendoline.

Just Jaeckin was born on this date in 1940.
