Q&A on T&A with the Screenwriters of The Last Exorcism and The Virginity Hit

Writing partners and independent filmmakers Huck Botko and Andrew Gurland may seem as unlikely a team as has ever scored mainstream Hollywood success but, remarkably, audiences are enjoying two of their high-profile films on a big screen near you—right this minute!

The team’s relentlessly unnerving, Eli Roth-produced The Last Exorcism (2010) opened in first place at the box office recently and this weekend brings The Virginity Hit (2010), a one-of-a-kind teen sex comedy produced by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay.

What makes the Botko-Gurland conquest of the suburban Cineplex so surprising, however, is the dark, dangerous and even deranged milieus from which both emerged.

Botko scandalized film festivals worldwide throughout the late 1990s with his “dessert-umentary” series.

Bearing straight-ahead titles such as Fruitcake, Baked Alaska, Cheesecake, and Graham Cracker Cream Pie, each film depicts Botko unspeakably defiling various confections and then serving them to his despised family members.

Gurland founded the New York Underground Film Festival, produced the Al Goldstein/Screw magazine documentary Screwed (1996), and, along with Todd Phillips (Old School, The Hangover), created Frathouse (1998), an up-close look at savage hazing rituals for HBO that never aired due to legal concerns (Gurland is proud that the movie is available now only through outlaw resources).

Together, Botko and Gurland made the barbarically vicious short comedies Julie, Broken Condom and (Mr. Skin's favorite) Gramaglia, before writing and directing the terrifically uncomfortable feature Mail Order Wife (2004).

Botko and Gurland talked to Mr. Skin about sex, nudity, horror, comedy and what happens next.

MR. SKIN: What was the first movie nude scene you remember seeing?

HUCK BOTKO: Some movie on HBO when I was in second grade. No idea what it was but there was full frontal and I remember overhearing another kid at school the next day who had seen the same movie telling everyone how you could see this woman's bush - but he would just call it her "front" because the crude adjectives hadn't entered our vocabulary yet.

ANDREW GURLAND: My dad likes to get to movies early and watch whatever else is playing at the theater until his movie starts.

When I was six, we walked into a scene that featured a guy with a ’70s mustache wearing jeans and no shirt painting a den with his girlfriend who was also wearing jeans with no shirt.

It freaked me out but is still an erotic image I hold on to. I also remember the Belushi peeping tom scene from Animal House as one of my first.

Spectral Sacks, Ghostly Glutes, and Phantom Furburger

Ghosts have a reputation for being depressive, gloomy, self-pitying, and no fun to be around. Having suffered through several extremely long dinner parties down in Knoxville with the Bell Witch and the pre-deceased Jim Varney (who was a delight, unlike his translucent ancestor), I can attest that that reputation is well earned.

But who can blame them? Unlike us vampires, who get to keep their bodies in perfect shape for all of eternity, the physical presence of ghosts is generally reduced to an unappealing and intangible blur.

But sometimes, the movies give us an improved version of reality. These ten movies contain naked specters who would turn Bill Murray and Harold Ramis from Ghostbusters into ghost-lusters!

Stanley Kubrick's posthumous erotic odyssey Eyes Wide Shut debuts in theaters on this date in 1999.

After laboring for years on the sex-driven Tom Cruise-Nicole Kidman thriller Eyes Wide Shut, master filmmaker Stanley Kubrick never lived to see the flesh-intensive fruits if his labors light up movie screens. He died on March 7, 1999.

The movie opened to mixed reviews for its unhurried pacing and occasionally meandering plot, which chronicles Cruise spelunking into the sexual underbelly of New York City over the course of a single night away from home.

Still, there is no debating the power of Nicole in the nude, not to mention standout nakedness from Julienne Davis and, as a mysterious figure who leads our hero into an orgy loaded with uncredited females in the buff, Abigail Good.

Aside from being Earth Day, today also happens to be the birthday of some of the Earth's most notable skin-habitants. Some of them, like V.I. Lenin (father of the Soviet Union), J. Robert Oppenheimer (father of the atomic bomb) and Flora Disney (mother of Walt Disney) are important because of the newsworthy place they occupy in history. Other are significant for reasons that are far more nudes-worthy. Here are my six skinstant celebrity birthdays for today.

Marilyn Chambers went from being the smiling woman on the cover of the Ivory Soap box to getting a face full of soapy scum in the seminal seventies porno flick Behind the Green Door (1972). Five years later, Chambers appeared in Canadian sci-fi auteur David Cronenberg's vampire flick Rabid (1977), where she sucks down a different type of body fluid.

Baltimore's favorite son John Waters' early work, especially his undisputed masterpiece Pink Flamingos (1972), was enormously influential in the development of underground cinema, midnight movie culture, and generally bad taste in entertainment. Waters shocked the world in the 90s when he came out as a gay man and today he continues to make twisted movies. And I love him for it.

Chicago native Jack Nitzsche died in 2000, but not before filling out an incredibly impressive resume. He famously worked and had subsequent falling-outs with Phil Spector and Neil Young in the 60s and 70s, but I especially appreciate the soundtracks he produced for skinematic classics like Performance (1970), Hardcore (1979), Cruising (1980) Personal Best (1982), 9 ½ Weeks (1986) and The Hot Spot (1990). Jack, we need you back!

One of Hollywood's most enduring talents, Jack Nicholson's career is the stuff of legend. But if anyone needs a reminder why we all a debt of gratitude to the 71-year old Lakers fanatic who famously banged Lara Flynn Boyle from 1999 to 2001, here are a few: He made out with a naked Lia Beldam before she turned into a naked Billie Gibson in The Shining (1980); he plowed his face into Jessica Lange's muff in The Postman Always Rings Twice (1981); and he got into a hot tub with a bare Kathy Bates in About Schmidt (2002).
