Written and directed by one of Spain's most acclaimed talents, Pedro Almodóvar, Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! (1989) whipped up attention around the globe for its kinky vibe, one vastly different from another of his famous films the previous year, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988). Antonio Banderas takes the lead as Ricky, a former mental patient who is intent on marrying Marina (Victoria Abril), a drug-addicted porno star whom he's been infatuated with since boffing her one night many moons ago. He ties her up, as the title implies, to convince her of his love, and lo and behold, Marina likes being the submissive. You'll get plenty of chances to see the actress naked, including one bathtub scene that, happily, has no bubbles but does have a toy diver who goes for the treasure at the end of the triangle (watch, and Mr. Skin's poetic phrasing will have you nodding your head with appreciation for both his words and Victoria's bod). And because you get to see everything but her ass in the tub, Almodóvar gives you a skintastic scene where the character shimmies a dress up her body, the fabric cupping and lifting her rear for a spectacular spotlight of her pretty derriere. While the Academy didn't give any nods to Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!, Spain's equivalent, the Goya Awards, certainly did. The film received 15 nomination, one for just about every category. And France gave it a nom for a César Award for Best Foreign Film. Worth watching, especially if you're a Señor Almodóvar fan.
