Their Eyes Were Watching God (2005)

Based on the classic novel by Zora Neale Hurston and boasting a star-studded African-American cast, the made-for-TV movie Their Eyes Were Watching God (2005) helped introduce a critically acclaimed book to a generation weaned on television. Beautiful Halle Berry stars as Janie Starks, a free-spirited woman in the 1920s-era Deep South who ignores her gossipy neighbors in favor of doing what brings her true happiness. Darnell Martin’s production boasts performances by Terrence Howard and Ruby Dee, as well as a production credit from Oprah Winfrey, but it’s Berry who steals the show.
