The Whiteoaks of Jalna

No Nudity

Review

This ambitious production became something of a running joke for years after--sort of like the Heaven’s Gate or Waterworld of Canadian television. Although it was meant to be an epic miniseries with a story that would demonstrate the nation’s literary relevance, it ended up a tedious and overdone debacle that turned most viewers off and became a laughing stock. By most accounts, it wasn’t a poorly done show. However, the ambition and the budget involved far exceeded the worth of the story being told. The original Jalna series consists of sixteen novels that tell the story of the Canadian Whiteoak family from 1854 to 1954, with the events mostly taking place in and around the manor house and its rich surrounding farmland known as "Jalna."  The author, Mazo de la Roche, gave the members of her fictitious family names from gravestones in Ontario's New Market Cemetery, and the story itself takes place in the grey area somewhere between fact and fiction. We’re not nearly as interested in The Whiteoaks of Jalna, however, as we are in the white peaks of Blair Brown. This gorgeous redhead, who starred as Pheasan Vaughan, later overloaded our senses when she climbed naked out of a sensory deprivation tank in Altered States. Judging by the perkiness of those erect nipples, we’d say her breasts were in an altered state of excitement--and they weren’t the only things! She also gave us a flash of skin in A Flash of Green, though what we’d really like to see is a flash of the pink.
