The Waltons

No Nudity

Review

Preceding the similar Little House on the Prairie by two years, the 1972 series The Waltons became a viewing staple in Middle America. Set in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia during the Great Depression of the 1930’s, the Walton family squeaks out a living from its sawmill on the aptly named Walton's Mountain. The story is told through the eyes of John Boy (Richard Thomas), an aspiring novelist who dreams of going to college and seeking fame as a writer. The nine year saga followed the family through the depression and subsequent war, as well as the usual maladies of school, courtship, marriage, birth, aging, and death--all of which seemed to occur in a mere blink of an eye, compared to how long it took the family to say “Goodnight” to each other at the end of every episode. Seriously! “Goodnight Grandpa, goodnight Grandma, goodnight Pa, goodnight Ma, goodnight Mary Ellen, goodnight Ben, goodnight Erin, goodnight Jim-Bob, goodnight Elizabeth, goodnight John Boy, JESUS TAP-DANCING CHRIST, GOODNIGHT ALREADY EVERYONE--AND WHO LEFT THE GODDAMN LIGHT ON IN THE KITCHEN! What most of the show’s “wholesome” audience may not be aware of is that two of the Walton girls showed the world their naughty bits once they came down from the mountain. Mary Elizabeth McDonough, who played freckle-faced angel Erin Walton, later had a topless scene in One of Those Nights before saying “Goodnight, nudity clause.” Meanwhile, Judy Norton-Taylor, who played older Walton sis Mary Ellen, did a stint in Playboy and later ended up in Playboy Video Magazine Volume 10. From the sawmill to the skin game--if only papa Walton could see his little angels now.
