Review

The TV Set (2006) follows rumpled writer David Duchovny, who's sold a network on his bittersweet autobiographical sitcom about a man returning home to deal with his brother's suicide, as he tries to protect his pet project from becoming a poop-joke-padded crapfest. The particular exec who is making his life heck is foul-mouthed, foul-souled, all-around-foul Sigourney Weaver, an iron lady who lives for the lowbrow. Fresh off her reality hit "Slut Wars," ornery Sigorney doesn't understand David's vision at all, and before poor Dave can start considering a suicide of his own, he's stuck with an unrecognizable, retooled story in place of his tender tale (not to mention an unbalanced lead actor and fart noises edited in to make the quiet moments appeal to the masses). Sigorney is a one-woman integrity zapper, and no one can get through to her: the only advice she'll take is that of her fourteen-year-old daughter. Hey Dave, welcome to TV, the mother lode of mediocrity!
