Review

A quartet of suburban families learns to deal with a variety of modern maladies in the star-studded and closely observed drama The Safety of Objects (2001). Based on a book of short stories by A.M. Homes, Rose Troche’s film chronicles the emotional grappling and sexual confusion of four sets of families. From the aging mother (Glenn Close) caring for her comatose son (Joshua Jackson) to the recent divorcée (Patricia Clarkson) looking for a quickie with her neighbor (Timothy Olyphant), the characters in Troche’s film swing wildly from emotional pole to pole. Jessica Campbell’s teenage character seems to have the right idea––instead of wading into other people’s messes, sometimes it’s better to make your own, which is exactly what the attractive youngster does during an autoerotic session.
