Kiwi auteur Geoff Murphy injects strange new life into a stale, sci-fi premise in the post-apocalyptic fantasy The Quiet Earth (1985). Bruno Lawrence stars as Zac Hobson, a brilliant New Zealand scientist who wakes up one morning to discover that he’s one of the last living men on earth. The top-secret project he’d been working on inadvertently decimated the human population of earth, leaving behind abandoned shopping centers, stadiums, and skyscrapers but few forms of life. Fortunately our Robinson Crusoe finds his Friday in the form of sexy Alison Routledge, one of only two survivors that turn up. Because the third hanger-on’s a guy, the two spend much of their time competing for the right to play Adam for a new generation. One thing’s for sure––the assignment is no chore. Routledge looks so sumptuous in her scantily clad role that you’ll be hoping for a real-life dystopian situation of your own to crop up.
