Review

Comedy lovers have been floored laughing by the antics of theatrical swindlers Max Bialystock and Leopold Bloom ever since they were played, respectively, by Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder in writer-director Mel Brooks's debut film The Producers (1968). All Messrs. Bialystock and Bloom want to do is create the ultimate Broadway flop and slip off with their investors' money. They think they've got it in the form of the delightful song-and-dance romp Springtime for Hitler but, this being one of cinema's best-loved farces, nothing can possibly go according to plan. Decades later, in real life, Brooks adapted the movie into a monumentally successful live musical production on the Great White Way, with Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick taking the lead roles. The Producers (2005) is the movie version of the musical, complete with Will Ferrell as the Nazi playwright and Uma Thurman more-than-ably filling out the role of full-bodied Swedish receptionist Ulla. She'll turn you into a Producer yourself.
