Nobody ever bats one thousand, at least not for long. The half dozen high-school hellions who strive to steal access to The Perfect Score (2004) put themselves in line to be taught tough, valuable life's lessons about unrealized expectations and encroaching failure, knowledge that cannot be measured by any form of standardized testing. Teenagers are plagued by myriad pressures and anxieties. The rest of us can only imagine ever understanding what drives these kids, unless we simply join director Brian Robbins's superb interlocking ensemble cast. In their portrayals, the emotional highs and lows of college-prep seniors who, desperate for success, plot to heist the answers to the SAT become real for us: It is as if the characters' life-and-death tensions were our very own.
