Lingerie-donning Doris (Barbra Streisand) uses her external pipes to make beautiful music with rich young men in the critical hit and box office smash The Owl and the Pussycat (1970). While working hard (and hardly working) for her money, the romantic comedy’s “lady of the evening” falls under the watchful fly of nerdy professor Felix Sherman (George Segal), a fellow tenant in her building. Intrigued by his naughty neighbor’s loud comings and goings, Felix trades his bookish life in for longing looks and clever repartee with Doris each day. Needless to say, he’s hoping to get his hooks in this happy hooker! But if panty-clad Doris falls for Felix will her pretty pussy be able to successfully mix pleasure with business? Or will she be driven out by her singular pleasure for his treasure? Buck Henry’s script takes the wit from Bill Manhoff’s same-named play while director Herbert Ross makes the most of the work’s supporting characters by casting Roz Kelly, Kim Chan, and porn star Marilyn Chambers (credited as Evelyn Lang). Breast of all, Ross shot a topless bit of Barbra’s bare chest which could only be seen in foreign prints. Nevertheless, Ms. Streisand still scored second place for a Laurel Award as Best Comedy Performance by a Female. If that’s not impressive enough, the Hollywood Foreign Press nominated her for Best Actress — Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. Maybe if Babs agreed to let her nude boobs remain in the final cut she could have been named Ms. Golden Globes!
