Michèle Stalens (Juliette Binoche) and Alex (Denis Lavant) are The Lovers on the Bridge (1991). Also known as Lovers on the Ninth Bridge and Les Amants du Pont-Neuf, the foreign flick is a love story between two homeless yet glamorous migrants. He is an alcoholic circus performer and she is an artist who is losing her sight. In other words, this drama is quintessentially French! The movie shows the couple’s daily hardships as they, and an older vagrant named Hans (Klaus Michael Grüber), take up residence on a bridge which is undergoing renovation. Yet theirs is a creepy romance, and not just because of Hans’s presence. In an effort to locate Michèle, the Stalens family places posters all over town but Alex ignores this since he prefers her to be dependent on him. He even spends his time trying to keep Michèle from getting an operation that could restore her vision! Apparently, he only wants her to have eyes (and body) for him. Luckily, we get to see the stunning sites of Paris which include Binoche’s skin! Thanks to the direction of Leos Carax, the camera captures the bodacious brunette in her birthday suit. In fact, when Michèle takes an outdoor shower we get to see Juliette’s three Bs! No wonder both the Chicago Film Critics Association and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts nominated The Lovers on the Bridge for Best Foreign Language Film. Had the motion picture been called The Lovely Binoche sans Britches, it could have won!
