The Lot

Review

Every week, the AMC channel’s original series The Lot opened with the "gossip of the day" in which washed up actress Holland Taylor (Letitia DeVine) spun tales of the studio era, circa 1937, with the behind the scenes stories of the director, cast, and crew at the fictional Silver Screen Pictures. This would segue into the main “plot,” which often contained less-than-flattering references to real life stars of the era combined with attempts at witty dialogue. The show ended the same way it began, with a usually drunk Holland giving us tidbits of juicy gossip about her "favorite" stars, then proceeding to trash them further once her radio minute is over. This look back at the filmmaking industry of yesteryear tried to mix acerbic wit with nostalgia and, by most critical accounts, failed dismally at both. It was generally hailed as an edgier version of Remember WENN, only without the charm or clever writing. One thing worth remembering about The Lot is that it starred the bewitching raven-haired beauty Linda Cardellini, who played the dorky yet oh so bangable “Velma” in the godawful cinematic equivalent of an anal probe Scooby-Doo. She also starred in such cack comedies as Dead Man on Campus and Legally Blonde--all of which we’ll forgive her for because she is just so . . . damn . . . FINE. Cardelinni gave us a taste of her carnal pleasures in Dead Man on Campus and Dying to Live and also spent a bit of time being naked in a cage and having her dumplings slung up in some kind of crazy boob-bondage device in Dee Snyder’s Strangeland.
