Brian Moore's 1955 novel is brought to the screen with a pair of outstanding performances. Smith stars as the title character, a crestfallen middle-aged woman who suffers because of her undying and somewhat misplaced faith in the church and whose life is stalled in rundown boarding houses. Hoskins is superb as her self-effacing suitor.
