The relationships between fathers and sons are difficult in the best of circumstances, and under sufficient strain result in mythical dysfunction, as embodied by the misadventures of Oedipus or those recounted in The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004). An oceanographer sets to sea for one last redeeming voyage, intending to track and kill the terrible shark that fatally snacked upon his best friend. The seafaring documentarian takes along a foxy magazine reporter, then tries to keep the scrumptious scribe in the dark as an airline copilot who quite possibly is his son, his estranged wife, pirates, kidnappers, money shortages, and a competing water-wandering team all threaten to turn his expedition into an exercise in absurdity. Is it any wonder that his perhaps kid is having second thoughts about joining the family?
