In between the release of Wes Craven’s cult classic The Hills Have Eyes (1977) and the second wave sequel The Hills Have Eyes 2 (2007) is Alexandre Aja’s spooky reboot The Hills Have Eyes (2006). While the initial pic catered to indie flick horror fans, this updated version lets mainstream audiences in on all of the original hubbub. The plot begins when retired detective Bob Carter (Ted Levine), his wife Ethel (Kathleen Quinlan) and their family (Aaron Stanford, Dan Byrd, Emilie de Ravin, Vinessa Shaw) travel through the New Mexico desert. Unfortunately, they stumble across a dangerous group of psychos. There’s Big Brain (Desmond Askew), Big Mama (Ivana Turchetto), Papa Jupiter (Billy Drago), Lizard (Robert Joy), and Pluto (Michael Bailey Smith). Needless to say, ax attacks and other gruesome acts ensue. In fact, the film was initially rated NC-17 for its graphic violence, but was later cut for a more suitable R rating. Best of all, the chills are balanced by thrills in the fetching forms of the comely cast. As Lynne Carter-Bukowski, Ms. Shaw shows off her deep cleavage via a white brassiere. If that’s not titillating enough, Brenda Carter (de Ravin) dons an itsy bitsy teeny weeny baby blue bikini as she sunbathes on the rocks. Although these stacked stunners never get naked on screen, they add some flesh to the guts, making this a perfectly evenhanded movie to watch one-handedly. In other words, the hills may have eyes but Mr. Skin has a boner for the film’s hilly eyefuls!
