Review

Science and scientists, at least in science-fiction moralist drama, can never leave well enough alone. The brain-powered power nerd cooking up ungodly experiments in The Fly (1986) would seem to have everything a bright young beaker boy might ever wish for. He’s paid plenty of money to tinker about in a research laboratory, diverting himself with experiments that he would gladly do for free; he lives in a cool apartment and has a closet full of monochromatic clothing; he’s blessed with a self-effacing, sly wit that wins him the affection of any number of scintillating and smart ladies. Still, bright guy is not satisfied. He insists upon arrogantly flaunting his disdain for the laws of nature. As a result, he is turned into one of nature’s most ignominious creatures. On the bright side, the wayward scientist evolves into a being that can eat poop and smile.
