A New York City dental hygienist grows obsessed with the subject of a world-famous canvas in the arty short film The Dutch Master (1995). Mira Sorvino stars as Teresa, a taciturn tooth scrubber left cold by the sight of hunky, half-naked males. Teresa’s fetish, it turns out, is a Pieter De Hooch painting at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which depicts a charmingly fresh-faced young Dutchman. Director Susan Seidelman sends her heroine through the canvas’s boundaries and allows the unhappy young woman a chance to participate in life from a bygone age. Sadly, Sorvino neglects to use the opportunity to steam up the painterly scene, but the statuesque blonde does manage to turn some heads during her journey into a departed past.
