The Double Life of Veronique (1991)

The late Polish director Krzysztof Kieslowski is revered in arthouse circles for the otherworldly mastery of his Trois couleurs trilogy, but Kieslowski’s beautiful command of story and emotion was already in full flower in the dazzling bouquet of wonder and awe that is Double Life of Veronique (1991). To term this sensual and spiritual gift to be a glorious meditation upon duality, personality, love, and fate is to entirely short shrift the immersion into life’s most compelling mysteries that begins with the introduction of Polish Veronika and her Parisian double, Veronique. If an afterworld does exist, then Kieslowski’s visions provide breathtaking glimpses of what we might see there.
