The underseen ’70s sleeper The Day of the Locust (1975)--based on the classic novel--stars William Atherton as a Yale grad wading through the sad underbelly of Hollywood in the 1930s. The neighbors in his humble apartment complex include meek accountant Donald Sutherland and trashy hooker Karen Black, who's eager to break into motion pictures. Black manages to be incredibly sexy while taking advantage of Sutherland’s innocent character, and the whole sordid affair is a forgotten triumph for director John Schlesinger. It’s worth watching just for the sight of an obnoxious kiddy star being beaten to death--but the real beating will be on your boner as Black bares her big-screen boobies.
