Review

The titular structure in the cult horror favorite The Church (1989) stands atop a burial ground riddled with the bones of witches. Naturally (actually, make that "supernaturally"), the spirits of these wicked ladies are loath to lay at rest and, after some unwitting unearthing, all manner of demonic chaos engulfs the formerly peaceful house of worship. Directed by Michael Soavi (Cemetery Man [1993]) and co-written by Italian fright icons Dario Argento and Lamberto Bava, The Church bathes the screen with the expected sloppy gore and sexy female flesh, along with a particularly cool-looking monster and the added impact of seeing all this spookery played out among images of the upright and holy. The Church is a blessing for fear fans.
