Review

Dance legend Gene Kelly switches gears to direct the Western romp The Cheyenne Social Club (1971) starring Oscar winners James Stewart, Henry Fonda, and Shirley Jones. The plot kicks off when an aging cowboy named John O’Hanlan (Stewart) finds out that he’s inherited some kind of social club in Cheyenne, Wyoming. As such, he and his buddy Harley Sullivan (Fonda) head there to check it out. But what they find is a brothel! After O’Hanlan decides to turn the place into a boarding house, he annoys some of the women who earn a living as ladies of the night. This includes Annie Jo (Jackie Joseph), Carrie Virginia (Jackie Russell), and Sara Jean (Sharon DeBord). To make matters worse, a clause in the will says O’Hanlan will lose everything if the females flee the club. In other words, the well-meaning man has to run a whorehouse! Of course, there are worse fates to have — especially since the working women are as sexy as Opal Ann (Sue Ann Langdon) whose low-cut outfits showcase her heaving cleavage. Not to be outdone, pretty Pauline (Elaine Devry) parades her peaks in a see-through nighty. Sweet dreams! Even though this PG-rated comedy displeased most of the movie critics in its day, the immodest motion picture managed to turn a modest profit at the box office. Since then, it captivated cable fans. Add in all of the spank bank interest it generated throughout the decades and it’s clear The Cheyenne Social Club is worthy of Mr. Skin’s membership!
