It’s 1764 and something decidedly not human is laying waste to the simple folk of rural France in the historical pic Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001), not to be confused with the horror flick The Brotherhood of Satan (1971). Actually, this foreign film is also a chiller diller. Inspired by the legend of Gévaudan, the box office hit uses a combination of CGI special effects and animatronics from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop to mimic the monster. Even though we can’t see whatever this beast is, we hear its growls and witness the horror of its attacks. Fortunately, ace scientist and explorer Grégoire de Fronsac (Samuel Le Bihan) along with his Iroquois sidekick Mani (Mark Dacascos) are on a mission to quell the antagonist. Together, they whip up an army of forty thousand and ignite all manner of incredible action and adventure in this howling rip-roarer that blends swashbuckling, martial arts, occult, and werewolf themes into an epic like no other. Brimming as it is with fang-baring, high-kicking, sword-fighting fun, Brother of the Wolf gives us good reason to wolf-whistle at the Gallic eyefuls on camera. For her poky-showing portrayal of Marianne de Morangias, Émilie Dequenne won Best New Actress at the Cabourg Romantic Film Festival. Not to be upstaged, Italian babe Monica Bellucci nabbed a Best Supporting Actress nomination from the Saturn Awards for her revealing role as Sylvia. While in bed with Monsieur Le Bihan, Moan-ica bares her beautiful breasts and fine fanny. Needless to say, the part showcases her parts!
