Boasting an uncharacteristic performance from John Travolta, The Boy in the Plastic Bubble (1976) features a pre-Vinnie Barbarino Travolta in the real-life role of Tod Lubitch, a boy born with a rare immune-system deficiency. Because any contact with bacteria is likely to kill him, Lubitch spends his life in a self-imposed hermetically sealed plastic bubble that reduces all contact with the outside world. The situation’s pretty bleak, and Lubitch has the added burden of knowing that he’s never even going to get to first base. Fortunately Glynnis O’Connor offers to help by donning a blue bikini and making her perky assets available for scoping. Now that’s charity!
