The Avengers (1961-1969)

No Nudity

Review

Where the TV series got it right, the feature film adaptation of the series got it totally, completely wrong. The Avengers became the cult hit that it was because it had style by the truckload. It wasn’t loud, brash and showy, it was cool, quiet and smooth. The humor was intelligent, the plots over the top, the villains ridiculous, but Steed (Patrick Macnee) and Peel (Diana Rigg) were always the epitome of everything cool. John Steed works for British Intelligence with a female partner, solving problems for the UK Government and the world at large that border on the psychedelic. Killer clowns, cyborgs, hidden cities, a killer that uses germs to make people sneeze to death.... if it were any sillier it would fall in on itself, but Macnee and Rigg knew just how to temper the giggles with the action. Rigg in particular often looked like she was about to burst out laughing, and Macnee never frowned in the entire seven seasons of the show. Hotties Honor Blackman and Linda Thorson had short turns in the female lead seat, but to fans of the show nobody will ever beat their fave – the fine, the foxy Diana Rigg. And they’ll never mention Ralph Fiennes.
