Hollywood legend Elia Kazan is best known for mid-century Marlon Brando vehicles like A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) and On the Waterfront (1954), but few of the director’s films were as personal as his moody problem picture The Arrangement (1969). Based on Kazan’s own novel of the same name, the star-studded drama features Kirk Douglas as a wealthy playboy whose life is turned upside down by a disastrous car wreck. Kirk’s priorities are quickly shuffled, so that before long he’s chasing his lost lover Gwen (Faye Dunaway) while his angry wife tries to empty his bank account. Dunaway does away with the late-’60s competition with some amorous beach blanket bingo, while costar Deborah Kerr shakes her rump in an effort to keep pace.
