Juzo Itami’s quirky comedy Dandelion (1985)--distributed internationally as Tampopo--became an instant hit on the arthouse circuit, scooping up numerous film awards and birthing a brand new genre: the noodle western. The film chronicles a truck driver’s (Tsutomu Yamazaki) quest to help the beautiful widow Tampopo (Nobuko Miyamoto) make the best bowl of ramen noodles in town. Itami uses his conceit as a springboard to lambaste contemporary Japanese avarice and cultural schizophrenia. Viewers who don’t feel like using their noodles will still dig the scenes involving sexy Fukumi Kuroda. The beauty skips ahead to dessert during a dalliance with a ravenous male pal.
