Review

Although unfathomable as a phenomenon today, in 1950s America, countless attractive and intelligent women every day clasped their hands upon their breasts and thanked the heavens above that homosexuality was a passing and reversible fancy. The tale of one such woman is told in Straight-Jacket (2004). Gay pride week was a long way off during the decade that saw McCarthyism and a steady stream of James Dean’s girlfriends. A major studio movie star could not very well let his penchant for doing dudes become public if he expected to land any major parts other than the ones he picked up in certain Santa Monica Boulevard barroom bathroom stalls. To deflect public suspicions of his private inversion, the gay matinee-idol hero of Straight-Jacket enters wedded camouflage with a dim executive secretary who fails to realize that she is merely a beard. Unwitting, but wonderfully cute, the ditz sets about winning over the heart and hard-on of her bent Adonis. Girlfriend has game! Don’t be surprised if she wins!
