Something is Out There

No Nudity

Review

Something is Out There opened with promise with four excellent (if a bit lengthy) pilot episodes. They featured the cops Jack Breslin (Joseph Cortese) and Frank Dileo (George Dzundza) searching for a serial killer who has a penchant for dismembering his victims. At one of the crime scenes they meet the mysterious Ta'Ra (Maryam d'Abo) who claims that she has come from another planet to save the earth from an escaped shapeshifting alien called Xenomorph. Although he initially doesn’t believe her, Jack soon has to accept the fact that there’s at least some truth to what Ta'Ra has told them. Moreover, despite being involved with Mandy Estabrook (Kim Delaney), the daughter of Commissioner Estabrook (Robert Webber), Jack and Ta'Ra soon get close. Meanwhile the Xenomorph continues its killing spree without sparing the ones closest to them. Based on this intriguing (though admittedly not new) premise, director Richard A. Colla created one of the best made for TV sci-fi productions of the eighties. This series had everything this genre needs: 1. Enough tension and shock moments to keep the viewer on the edge of his seat, 2. Very good special effects (by 1988 TV standards), 3. A high amount of violence and grittiness that many other made for TV productions lack completely, 4. Two fully developed, charismatic heroes played by competent actors (Joseph Cortese and Maryam d'Abo), and 5. A top-notch supporting cast (George Dzundza, Kim Delaney, and the late Robert Webber in his final role). Nudity? Forget it, though Maryam D’Abo looks breathtaking throughout. For the former Bond-girl’s hottest scenes to date check out the Red Shoe Diaries episode Another Woman's Lipstick where she not only did a little bit of toplessness but also some excellent lower frontal nudity. Nice beaver!
