War is hell, even if you’re a would-be spectator living in a supposedly neutral country. In Soldier of Orange (1977), Holland’s most famous and successful director, Paul Verhoeven, presents an epic World War II historical drama from a point of view that most Americans would find incomprehensible. Six Dutch fraternity brothers frolic in wealth and ease at the start of the Nazi aggression, confident that their homeland will remain an innocent bystander to a war between Germany and England. This misplaced comfort is shattered when the Luftwaffe flattens the port of Rotterdam in a day and S.S. officers pop up on every street corner and along every canal. The fraternity lads are thrust into an underground battle that will pit Dutchman against Dutchman and make each of them face their darkest demon within.
