Towel Day is celebrated every year on May 25th,” explains Wikipedia, “as a tribute to the author Douglas Adams by his millions of fans. On this day, fans openly carry a towel with them, as described in Adams’ immensely popular The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. The commemoration was first held on May 25, 2001, two weeks after Adams’ sudden death from a massive heart attack.”

If only he had heeded his own words:

Just 49 years of age, Adams was cremated with his favorite towel.

“This international holiday sees devotees of the author and his book carrying towels with them to work, to school and as part of their daily activities,” reads one explanation. “The most important thing that you need to remember in order to celebrate is DON’T PANIC (above right). No matter what the day throws at you, draw comfort in the knowledge that you’re armed with your trusty towel. All that matters is that your towel never leaves your side.” Even if you let it ride…up!

The inspiration for all this devotion is a single quotation—on the importance of towels found in Chapter 3 of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy—known as H2G2 to its followers—which states: “A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have…Any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy and still knows where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with.”
