Review

A French novelist falls prey to a bizarre practical joke in the eerie thriller Sérail (1976). Corin Redgrave plays a scribe with a strong affinity for the bizarre. While exploring the woods one afternoon, he comes across a dilapidated manor occupied by an unusual girl (Bulle Ogier). Her kooky tour piques his interest, and he returns soon after to discover that a new girl (Marie-France Pisier) has taken her place. Obsessed with the shifting circumstances, the writer decides to buy the house for himself and, in so doing, falls right in the trap of the shrewd teases, who knew that their trickery would close the sale. Still, it might not be bad if the chicks stick around--the way Pisier takes her time getting out of the tub, there’s plenty to keep a lonely bachelor occupied.
