Review

If Christianity had nothing else to recommend it, the predominant religion of the Western world would still be cherished as the inspirational spark behind School of the Holy Beast (1974). The Japanese--at least the natives of the rising sun responsible for creating this slice of exploitative convent carnality--have an idiosyncratic view of outside cultures. Director Norifumi Suzuki’s objective and objectifying perspective includes nuns in bondage; devout females in all stages of undress, duress, and lesbian progress; and clerical motives that mix the sacred and the obscene. School of the Holy Beast presents an irreligious doctrine very much at odds with that taught in middle American Bible class. If you’ve seen it already, a refresher course might be in order.
