Review

A fiercely devout Roman Catholic grows convinced that her deceased child is still alive in the irreverent Mexican comedy Santitos (1997). National treasure Dolores Heredia throws herself into the role of Esperanza, the cross-clutching heroine who embarks on a spiritual odyssey to retrieve her dead child after receiving a vision from St. Jude. Following clues that guide her through Tijuana brothels, Los Angeles sex clubs, and scandalous stops in between, Esperanza grows increasingly certain about the veracity of her revelation, allowing director Alejandro Springall ample opportunity to poke fun at religious devoutness. Fortunately Heredia’s beliefs don’t get in the way of some good old-fashioned sinning--the raven-haired beauty lets it all out as she tangles with a loverboy wrestler.
