A young woman struggles with motherhood and the consequences of drug abuse in the tender French drama Sabine (1993). Based on a short story by Agnès L'Herbier, Philippe Faucon’s film chronicles the hardship of the eponymous Sabine (Catherine Klein), who quickly becomes pregnant after getting booted from her father’s house. The heroine eventually makes the acquaintance of a young tart who gets her hooked on the needle––a development that causes poor Sabine to contract HIV. By the time her child is born, Sabine’s so sick that she barely has any time to spend with the newborn before succumbing to the illness completely. It’s a tearjerker of an ending, but Klein’s good enough to offer a flesh flash before she passes—that’s a jerker of another kind.
