A martial arts master tries to turn over a new leaf as a modest shopkeeper in the low-budget actioner Revenge of the Ninja (1983). Sam Firstenberg’s B-flick stars real-life fighting prodigy Shô Kosugi as Cho, a Japanese emigrant who flees his homeland after skilled ninjas lay waste to his family. Setting up shop in America, Cho and his son, Kane (Kane Kosugi), agree to sell precious Japanese dolls for a shady importer-exporter (Arthur Roberts). Late in the game, however, Cho discovers that his business contact is using the dolls to sell heroin––and that he’s in cahoots with the ninjas who murdered Cho’s family. The final act of Firstenberg’s film is, quite predictably, a bloodbath, but there are some glimmers of sensuality amidst the gore. Ashley Ferrare shows skin as a nubile young innocent who’s treated to the rough stuff by a sumo wrestling brute right before ninjas do the fat fighter in.
