With the advent of the ultra-violent, blackly comic Pulp Fiction (1994), a gauntlet was thrown. Any budding filmmaker with an ounce of attitude and a pound of testosterone, particularly were he British, accepted the challenge to create the next great stylized, hip and sexy, highly verbal gangster pic. Rancid Aluminum (2000) is a riot of dark laughs mixed in with gales of storming, cartoon-style violence. The plot lines wind around an underhanded sharpster’s schemes to enlist the Russian mafia in an attempt to take over business interests he feels entitled to. But he is not alone in his feelings of entitlement, and conflict leads to mayhem, murder and muffled titters.
